The History Of Search Engines

Monday, August 31st, 2009

When the World Wide Web came into being in the early 1990s, almost twenty years since the ‘ARPANET/internet’ went public, it has thrown open the doors to a virtual and vast new world of information, which was both unfathomable and ever expanding. But, as the number of web pages and the number of people accessing the internet increased, accessing a particular resource from the sea of information became a problem, especially in the event of a person not knowing the URL of a particular website. Necessity has always been the mother of invention; the need for a tool to search the required resource from the millions of pages of information in the World Wide Web was gravely felt. So what is considered to be the first amongst the first generation of search engines ‘Archie’ was created.
Archie was created by Alan Emtage in 1990 and used the directory listings of all files existing in the public anonymous FTP websites to create a searchable database of file names. A year later, Gopher, which had a similar purpose to Archie, but with text files, was introduced by Mark McCahill at the University of Minnesota. The programs, Veronica and Jughead, which followed Gopher, worked similarly, on plain text files sent via Gopher.
The world of web searches took a decisive turn in 1993, when MIT student Matthew Gray made the first robot, the World Wide Web Wanderer. It was initially meant to count web servers on the World Wide Web, but was later reprogrammed to search URLs as well, thus forming the first website database, Wandex. ALIWEB released in 1993 was also a robot, but with an added feature allowing users to submit their own URLs for indexing purposes.
Web robots are also called web crawlers, web spiders or web wanderers. In its earlier versions, it was criticized for taking too much bandwidth, often leading to a server crash. But the issue was sorted out in later generations.
As the World Wide Web started to grow phenomenally by the mid 90s, realizing its financial potential, more players began throwing their hats into the ring. Excite was the first to make their presence felt and it used statistical analysis of word relations to spot a particular web resource. It was followed by Yahoo in 1994, as a website providing a listing of its favorite web pages. The format of the main link or URL followed by a brief description of what is in the site was first introduced by Yahoo. Within a year, funds started to flow in, and soon Yahoo became a corporation.
Lycos, with its prefix matching, relevance retrieval, and word proximity, announced its entry onto the webi in almost the same period as Yahoo. It was a large search engine and by 1996, it had indexed over 60 million web pages, the biggest by any search engine of that time. Alta Vista is another search tool that had made headlines again in the same period - with advanced search options and allowing natural language inquires. It was also the first to provide multimedia search options to find music files, videos, and pictures.
Ironic as it may be, the search engine that is touted as the most popular today, Google, came into existence rather late in the scene in 1997. It used inbound links to rank websites, but the results it produced were widely accepted and in another year’s time, it became the most sought after search engine in the world. Its nearest competitor, MSN Search, and Open Directory, the biggest hand edited catalogue of the web, came into being in 1998.
As of now, Google has the greatest number of patrons, followed by Yahoo and MSN.
In the near future, as the scene consolidates, the number of search engines that remain in the race may come down to the current top few. But then all will be providing more advanced and diverse features alongside searching, and it is the common netizens who stand to gain from the final outcome. After all, this is how product economics responds to competition!
Finally it should be said, that the number of search engines that have come and gone without leaving a trace in between, are many. However, only the most significant ones have been mentioned in this article.

The Effects Of Funny Things

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

This article looks at the wonderful effects of laughter & really funny things.
Are you feeling run down? You could try laughing more! Some researchers think laughter could be the best medicine, helping you feel better and bringing that spring back into your step.
It makes sense that if people can get more laughter in their lives, they are happier and healthier too.
Laughter is a wonderful thing - that’s why we have all heard the saying “laughter is the best medicine”. There is strong evidence that laughter can actually improve health and help fight disease.
Test the theory and see for yourself!
First id like you to think of some really funny things, situations you have been in or pictures you have seen, as long as it’s really funny!
Now I want you to smile, come on! Let the corners of your mouth turn up. Giggle, chortle, chuckle. And slowly build up into a loud laugh.
How do you feel now? Refreshed? Exhilarated? According to recent studies done by neuroscientists and psychologists, as well as the newest fads in holistic medicine, laughter is the greatest panacea yet discovered.
It has been credited with everything from lowering blood pressure and reducing chances of heart attacks and strokes to increasing your intelligence and capabilities to retain process information.
Humour and laughter are regularly being used in a variety of therapeutic situations.
Research into the use of therapeutic humour tells us it has the power to motivate, alleviate stress and pain and improve one’s sense of well being.
When really funny things make us laugh, natural killer cells which destroy tumours and viruses increase, along with Gamma-interferon (a disease fighting protein), T- cells (important for the immune system) and B - cells (which make disease -fighting antibodies).
As well as lowering blood pressure, laughter increases oxygen in the blood, which also encourages healing.
What is laughter?
Believe it of not laughter is not the same as humour. It is the physiological response to humour and is made of two parts - the production of a sound and a set of gestures.
Laughing causes our brain to conduct both the production of a sound and a set of gestures simultaneously.
Why do we laugh?
Some researchers believe that strengthening human connections is related to why we laugh because laughter occurs more often when people are comfortable around one another.
Have you noticed in an office everyone in the office laughs when the boss laughs? This is because dominant people use laughter more often than their subordinates.
Laughing and Humour is like a medicine and a very powerful one.
It can bring together families in troubled times, reduce anger and frustration and lower your stress levels.
If you can laugh at yourself or a situation you are in that seem overwhelming it will help to diffuse the stress.
Laughter and really funny things serve a great purpose in our life not only from a medical point of view we discussed earlier but it will make you feel better about yourself and the world around you. It will make a bad situation seem a little less daunting.
A hearty laugh a day may well keep the doctor away, so keep looking at really funny things!

How Following a Hunch Can Mean a Heap of Trouble

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

Following a hunch can mean a heap of trouble. Because even though you may think that hunches are intuitive - they’re not. At least, not necessarily.
Hunches can be picking up subtle vibes, or, they can be throwbacks to old situations, pains, fears, etc.
- So how do you know the difference between a hunch and true guidance?
Now, I’m not normally the dictionary-quoting kind of person, but this is just too telling to leave out:
Here’s what the dictionary says for “hunch”:
An intuitive feeling or a premonition,
To bend or draw up into a hump,
To assume a crouched or cramped posture
Hmm? Makes you think, huh?
Now, compare that to the definition for “intuition”:
Direct perception of truth or fact, independent of any reasoning process;
The act or faculty of knowing or sensing without the use of rational processes
The power or faculty of gaining direct knowledge or cognition without evident rational thought and inference
When you read these two groups of definitions, which one leaves you feeling tense and constricted? And which one leaves you feeling open and expanded?
Hunches, by definition, are tension-wrought.
Intuition, however, speaks of effortlessness.
- So those little flashes I get… should I listen to them?
Well, just ’cause it’s subtle, doesn’t mean it’s true. I could whisper, “I’m a purple elephant” into your ear, and that doesn’t make it any more true than if I shouted it at the top of my lungs.
What matters is how it affects your heart.
- Does this mean all guidance feels positive, and hunches feel negative?
Not at all. Your heart can hear true warnings, and stay expanded - it’s a knowing that the course ahead isn’t for you.
Take these two situations, for example:
1: Someone calls you up and asks if they can reprint an article you’ve written in their newsletter. And while you’re talking, you feel a tug in your gut, the hair on the back of your neck stands up, and it doesn’t feel good.
2: You’re talking with a potential client, and they’re asking you about your services. In the midst of the conversation, you feel yourself getting excited, because this is someone you know has a lot of influence, and if you do good work for them it could be really beneficial for your business.
- Is one a hunch, and one true guidance?
The only way you’ll know is if you check in with your heart. Based on these feelings alone, you could be stuck in a picture of the past, or getting good inspiration - you just can’t tell yet.
So, you check in with your heart, and you feel…
1: your heart feels okay, as if the bombs are exploding all around, but your heart isn’t really affected.
2: you heart feels tight, squeezed.
- So what does that tell you?
It tells you that in both situations, you’re having reactions based on past events. That’s the tension in the first situation, as well as the excitement in the second.
But, in the first situation, your heart is open, while in the second, your heart is closing down. And that tells you that the first situation has potential in it, and it’s something to be paid attention to. But the second, where your heart is clearly shutting down, is a situation to be avoided.
- So how do you reconcile the heart feelings with the gut feelings?
Know that your heart is connected to the infinite oneness, and a greater perspective of truth. Your reactions, however, are based on your past.
Your feelings will always steer you towards what you believe is positive, and away from what you believe is negative; it’s all they can do, because it’s all they see.
Your heart, however, is tapped into a wisdom that goes beyond your experiences. It can grant you knowledge that your past cannot.
So, which one do you want to listen to? ;-) The moral of the story:
Hunches only speak to feelings. And feelings, no matter how strong, are incomplete unless you consult your heart. So don’t let your hunches get you into a heap of trouble, when your heart is waiting to bail you out!

Consumers Need ‘More Help With Debt’

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

More work needs to be done to help consumers get to grips with making loan repayments and other aspects of their money management, an industry expert has declared.
Speaking at Helping People Make the Most of their Money - the inaugural money conference held by Citizens Advice - Teresa Perchard, director of public policy for the advisory service, stated that both businesses and regulatory bodies should help those borrowers who are struggling with their finances. Ms Perchard reported that financial services providers need to be more responsible when issuing personal loans and other types of credit, so making sure that consumers will successfully be able to meet demands for repayments.
In addition, the director also pointed towards moves carried out by Citizens Advice to aid people in handling their debts more effectively. For instance, the greater provision of financial advice to encourage a better attitude towards personal loans and other types of lending, in addition to giving people the confidence to manage their matters, is among the initiatives being carried out to stop Britons getting themselves in unmanageable debt difficulties.
She said: “But we need more help from regulators and businesses. Time and time again we come across people in desperate straits who need not be there if the firm who lent them money had acted responsibly on day one. And while some regulators have taken action on scandals like the mis-selling of payment protection insurance, others seem to be asleep on the job.”
Ms Perchard also pointed out that the problems experienced by Northern Rock earlier this year and the collapse of Farepak towards the end of 2006 have caused the public’s confidence in the financial services sector to reach an all-time low. As an example of those consumers struggling with their finances, Citizens Advice highlighted the case of a pensioner, who over the course of a ten-year period, had taken out 25 personal loans and credit cards. With consequent debts of 135,000 pounds, the advisory service pointed out that there were no checks put into place to see if she would be able to afford to make repayments.
Her comments come after research from the charity showed that its staff handled a record 1.7 million debt enquiries over the course of 2006-07, a figure which is some 20 per cent higher than the previous year. She also reported that as Britons are an estimated 1.3 trillion pounds in the red via unsecured loans and other types of borrowing, personal finance and debt matters are now among the largest issues facing the nation’s economy.
For those finding that they are struggling to meet numerous demands on their spending, the option of applying for a debt consolidation loan could well be the way for them to get back on their financial feet. Speaking earlier this year, Steven Baillie, head of loans for Sainsbury’s Bank, reported that debt consolidation is the most popular reason for consumers to take out a personal loan. However, he advised those considering making an application to make sure that they do not go back into the red and that they take the time to shop around for a competitively-priced deal.

Accounting Degree Benefits for Businesses and Firms

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

Now that you’ve finished your studies you are looking for accounting degree employment. Theoretically, you should not have too much trouble in this search. There are many unorganized businesses out there which could use a professional accountant. A certified public accountant does just that: keeps track of financial transactions and records in the business.
The majority of business owners ask themselves if they should hire an accountant or not. Having an unorganized business is not an option, because that would lead to bankruptcy. Of course there is also the possibility to use an accounting software, but not anyone can use that either. The best thing to do is to look for a person with an accounting degree.
The first obvious choice for a business owner would be to look for a professional in an accounting firm. This has the advantage that you can find accountants who are well trained and experienced. This is not mandatory though, and you can as well hire an accountant who works on his own. This should be your own decision based on what type of accounting job you need.
How can one become certified public accountant? In America, you need to meet a few requirements, as in most of the countries worldwide. Usually, you need about 150 accounting college hours. You will also have to pass an exam. But this is only if you want to become a certified public accountant.
If you, however, are at the other end of the deal, meaning a business owner, you have more than one option when hiring an accountant. You can do it as a long term arrangement, or, as some business owners do, with the only purpose of him paying the taxes. But why hire a professional accountant with the sole purpose of paying taxes?
The answer is simple. Accountants are the ones who know best how to increase business deductions and maximize profit. You could be familiar yourself with some of these procedures but accountants are those who know them all. In the end, it’s your choice whether you permanently want to hire an accountant, hire one for short periods of time, or even learn accounting yourself.
If you decide that you want to hire an accountant make sure you check his qualifications. You can work with a local accountant or look for one in an accounting firm.
Whatever you decide, you have to make sure that the respective person has an accounting degree. And hiring a professional to keep your financial situations in order is a very wise thing to do. You need to have the correct tax returns if you want not to get in trouble with the law. After all, there are many professionals out there who are looking for accounting degree employment.

Men’s Leather Jackets: How To Choose The One For You

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

A leather jacket is a must for every man’s wardrobe and is also a great way to express his personal style. Leather jackets never go out of fashion and are warm, durable, timeless and always looks classic. Invesment in leather jackets is one time and can be used over the years without getting spoit. Always purchase a leather jacket that is of the right fit and quality as it is a one-time investment.
Here are the few basic things you should consider while purchasing a leather jacket.
1 Be prepared to spend at least $250.A good leather jacket costs around $500 or more. If you purchase it on sale it might cost you less. The price is not unreasonable considering the fact that how often you’ll wear it and for how long the jacket will last.
2 Buy one of the classic styles, which includes bomber, blazer and is also a zip-up jacket. A medium length jacket, which is above your thigh. Waist or hip-length jackets are versatile. A trench coat can be sleek and slimming on the right figure.
3 There is a wide range of colors to choose from but black is the most popular one, also you could consider shades of brown. The textures vary from buttery soft, thin leather to thicker, more durable jackets. Suede, which requires more care, is another option to choose from.
4 While purchasing the leather jacket make sure the jacket’s construction is right. Seams should be strong and perfect and the bottom hem should be straight. The collar and pockets should lie flat. Check the lining for strong seams, especially in the pockets where you can get a lot of wear and tear. Motorcycle jackets should have vents, a padded kidney panel, and tough leather. All crucial for safe and comfortable riding.
Tips on how to keep the leather jacket
- Store your leather jacket either flat or on a wide, sturdy, padded hanger to prevent stretch marks. Make sure to never use a plastic cover.
- Take care of the stains pronto. When in doubt take the jacket to the dry cleaner.
Leather is not meant to get wet, as that tends to deplete the natural oils, and it is advisable to wear a rain suit over your leathers in inclement weather. However if they do get wet, allow them to dry naturally away from extreme heat. If the leather seems to be losing its luster, it can be oiled to improve its appearance. This supplements the natural oils in the leather itself, which can be washed out through repeated exposure to water. Frequent oiling of leather with mink oil or other commercially available products will keep your leathers supple and improve their lifespan dramatically.

Advanced Trampolining Stunts Explained

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

As your skill in trampolining increases, you’ll want to add more difficult stunts to your routines.
While you’re learning these advanced stunts, protect yourself by using a safety belt, or have a spotter guide you. One of the most basic is the front somersault.
Learn it step by step. Begin with a simple lead-up stunt - a forward roll from a squat stand. Practice it a few times from a still position.
Then go through it from a slight bounce. Gradually add more bounce until you can do the forward roll in the air without letting your hands touch the bed.
And in a while you should be ready to go into a fuller lead-up to the front somersault - the knee drop front somersault to seat drop. From a standing bounce, land in a knee drop.
As you bounce up, flip forward, grabbing your shins while you duck your head. When your legs start to spin underneath you again…pull out of the tuck and land in a seat drop. Work on the timing of your spin until you hit the bed evenly every time. Then try it landing on your feet.
Now you can go on to the complete front somersault from a standing bounce. After bouncing off your feet, try to stay in your spin just a little longer so you will land back on your feet. Start with a regular bounce.
As you come up, grab your shins and go into a tight tuck. Your body spins faster in tuck position, making it easier to complete a somersault. When your legs are almost under you…pull out of the tuck and land on your feet, flexing your knees to help kill your spin. Always try to land near the same spot from which you started. That’s the key to good somersaulting, whether it’s forward…or backward, as in the back pullover. A complete stunt in itself, the back pullover is also a good lead-up to the back somersault.
Start the back pullover with a regular bounce, landing on the lower part of your back, your hands under your thighs.
Coming up from your bounce, pull back hard on your thighs, this starts you into a back pullover somersault that you continue…until your feet touch the bed. Then straighten up and land standing. After you learn the timing for a back pullover…you can try a complete back somersault… adding a little extra bounce so your spin will carry you all the way around to your feet again.
As you take off from the bed, straighten your body while lifting your arms and keeping your head back.
Then bring your knees up so your hands grasp your shins, pulling you into a tuck position. Spin through your somersault, and when your legs are almost under you again…straighten out and land on your feet. Work on the back somersault until you can safely do it without a spotter or belt.
Then you can go on to a little more difficult stunt…the barani. In the barani you start a front somersault, do a half-twist in mid air, and land on the bed facing in the opposite direction. But before trying a barani from a stand…lead up to it with a knee barani, using your hands. In this stunt, you go from a knee bounce into a half-twist and land on your knees in the opposite direction.
Start it with a knee drop landing. Keep your arms raised overhead, ready to place them on the bed. From the knee landing…bounce forward into a handstand position, kicking your legs overhead and keeping your arms straight. From the handstand, give yourself a half-twist… so your legs carry you on over and you land on your knees again, facing the other way.
After practicing it a few more times, you should be able to do the complete knee barani without letting your hands touch the bed.
There are many more advanced stunts, none of which can be learned over night. But by practicing them gradually and regularly, you’ll find you can become a good trampoline performer and a valuable member of your gymnastic team.
